ABOUT THE BREED

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunting dog bred for hunting upland birds, waterfowl and also small furry game.  The GSP is  competitive in performance field events, agility, tracking and obedience. They are athletic, smart and when bred correctly, have excellent health and temperament for being a family companion or hunting partner. They require exercise daily and enjoy human companionship.  More information and resources can be found on the German Shorthair Pointer Club of America website www.GSPCA.org.
Their publication, the Shorthair Journal has good articles, and updated standings for competitive events.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe in advancing the breed by following breeding practices that include health clearances, proven hunting ability and special attention to GSP-AKC breed standard for correct conformation, temperament and intelligence.  These dogs like to be active. We take our dogs to the field and the show ring where they truly enjoy their work. And that's really what it's all about, giving the dogs a job they love and watching them execute what they've learned. Putting conformation (show) and/or hunt titles on our dogs is part of our commitment to breeding for both form and function. Training starts early to get their "head in the game", and the results speak for themselves.  Companion dogs benefit from activities they can enjoy doing with you: swimming, playing ball and  retrieving games, hiking, running and almost anything outdoors. The reality is that most puppies are placed in companion homes and need to be able to live and interact with both adults and children. We want to give them the best chance to thrive in any home.

TRAINING

The best way to keep your puppy and older dog out of trouble is to give him a job, which means doing a little training: whether it's BASIC OBEDIENCE or more advanced hunting or other competitive training, taking time to teach your dog new skills or reinforce what they know, will keep you and your friend satisfied. We strive to give the puppy the best start by early handling and puppy training before they go to their homes.  See our LINKS page for resources to help you get started. The GSP Club of Washington sponsors conformation and field events, with many members involved in training and showing their own dogs and is a great source of information.
